This course runs once a week for three hours over a 6 week period and will guide you through the basics of handbuilding and wheel throwing. If this is your first time working with clay, this is a fantastic introduction to the material. You’ll start each session by working with soft clay, rolling out coils to create a pot of your choice.
Throughout the course, you'll have the opportunity to explore the potential of hand building, experimenting with different shapes and textures, painting your pots, and adding decorative handles.
You’ll also learn how to prepare your clay and center it on the potter’s wheel. After a demonstration, you’ll try your hand at making shapes like cylinders and bowls, which you’ll trim a week later when the clay has firmed up.
The final session will focus on glazing. Each student will have the chance to choose from our studio glazes to finish their pieces.
For those who are more experienced, you are more than welcome! We can explore the techniques that best suit your goals and help you refine your skills to achieve the forms you want to pursue.
After the workshop, your pieces will be carefully dried and fired. Since the clay requires a slow drying process to prevent cracks and ensure even shrinking, it will take about 8 weeks before your work is ready for collection. We will notify you via email when your piece is ready to be picked up.
For the work that you decide to fire there will be a charge of £5 per kilogram to cover materials (clay, glaze) and firings.
This course will take place once a week on Wednesday mornings, for a total of 6 weeks between 23rd October and 27th November ‘24. Each session will be held from 10:30AM to 1:30 PM.
